La máscara del hombre de la nariz rota fue la primera escultura de Auguste Rodin que integró los fondos de Museo Soumaya. El ingeniero Carlos Slim Helú, admirador de la obra de Rodin, buscó en la década de 1990 la oportunidad de que en su país, México, se disfrutara, investigara y difundiera a uno de los maestros más importantes del imaginario occidental. La colección, que abrió sus puertas en 1994 en Tizapán, al sur de la Ciudad de México, se incrementó paulatinamente y ahora, la sala dedicada a la memoria de los padres del coleccionista, Julián y Linda Slim, exhibe uno de los más destacados acervos de la Era de Rodin.
Yeso, mármol, terracota, pasta de vidrio, tinta, gouache, óleo, acuarela bronce… técnicas y materiales clásicos en los que abrevaron generaciones de creadores que definieron el puente entre la tradición clásica y la modernidad.
Adquirida para México, es única en América Latina. La puerta del Infierno se sumó al acervo de Museo Soumaya después de un largo itinerario que comenzó en 2012 entre el Ministerio de Cultura de Francia, el Museo Rodin de París, la casa fundidora de Coubertin, también en la capital gala, y Fundación Carlos Slim en México. Un año después comenzó su fundición, misma que terminó en el otoño de 2015.
El viaje
Tras el cuidadoso embalaje inició su recorrido en París hacia el histórico puerto de El Havre. El 4 de abril de 2016, a bordo del barco noruego Höegh Autoliners A.S., junto con 1 900 automóviles y tres vagones de ferrocarril, se encontraba el pesado tripulante de bronce en una caja que alcanzó las 9.350 toneladas. El 15 de abril tocó Tánger, Marruecos. El 26 llegó a Cartagena, España y el 28 La puerta de Rodin zarpó. Así comenzó su travesía por el atlántico. El 2 de mayo arribó al puerto de Veracruz. Luego del trámite migratorio, el día 4 el monumento se liberó de la aduana portuaria. El conjunto escultórico pernoctó en la Plaza Nuevo Veracruz. Al día siguiente, a las 8 horas, emprendió su viaje definitivo a la Ciudad de México.
Lluvia, densa neblina en las Cumbres de Maltrata y el marco del volcán Iztaccíhuatl en Puebla, le dieron la bienvenida. A las 19:20 horas del 5 de mayo de 2016, La puerta del Infierno llegó a Plaza Carso. Ingenieros, museógrafos, trabajadores, expertos todos se dieron a la tarea de levantar el célebre monumento. A la 1:48 horas del 7 de mayo se puso en pie y el 9 se completó al coronarla con Las tres sombras.
Para celebrar el acontecimiento, se organizó junto con Museo Rodin esta exposición que busca profundizar y alumbrar uno de los conjuntos escultóricos más representativos del siglo xx, del que emergieron más de trescientas figuras. La exhibición –trabajada durante casi tres años por Museo Rodin y Museo Soumaya– inicia y al mismo tiempo finaliza en el vestíbulo de la sede de Plaza Carso, que recibe al visitante con la octava fundición de ocho de La puerta del Infierno.
La exposición
La exposición cuenta con videocédulas que permiten al visitante ubicar las piezas en La puerta, y que al mismo tiempo comprenda su génesis y conozca documentos, críticas y versos en el contexto de creación.
Se suman, por tanto, las nuevas tecnologías con la presencia de Realidad Aumentada. RA Infinitum es una aplicación sin costo que permite el escaneo de imágenes y así, obtener más información sobre las piezas.
Acompaña a la muestra un folleto que en 84 páginas explica cada uno de estos núcleos temáticos, las piezas más importantes así como un cartel donde se señala a los personajes de La puerta.
La exposición cuenta también con un libro especializado en el conjunto escultórico en el que se detalla su génesis, los dibujos preparatorios y las maquetas; los artistas motivo de inspiración para Rodin así como las fuentes literarias de las que abrevó, junto con la identificación de las figuras que conforman a la población infernal y las esculturas que de ellas derivaron. El libro, impreso en México, consta de 528 páginas; los especialistas de Museo Rodin junto a los investigadores y curadores de Museo Soumaya son los autores de estas reflexiones que logran un entendimiento único de La puerta del Infierno.
